Book a Campsite

As obvious as this one might seem, it’s easy to forget to do this early enough in the season. During peak camping weeks and weekends, finding an open RV spot can be difficult. Now that more and more people are turning to RVing to satisfy their wanderlust adventures, you could find some areas are fully booked.

That’s why you’ll need to figure out where you’re going and reserve a spot early on to ensure a smooth vacation. For ideas on where to go, check out our article on the top four luxury campgrounds in Florida (May 13, 2020).

Plan Out Your Route

When you know where you’re going, make sure you know how to get there. Remember that planning your route isn’t just about following your GPS directions. Consider looking for fun attractions to visit along the way and take note of any long stretches of time where you won’t be seeing much. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got enough fuel to get you through.\

Your Packing List

Let’s be real, this is the checklist that you’ve probably been looking for. Packing for an RV trip poses some unique challenges. Thankfully, with a Newmar RV, you’ll have an easier time finding storage places for all your gear.

Some quick tips before we get to that checklist: if you’re really starting from scratch, consider taking note of all the supplies you use in your daily life and make sure you’ve got the essentials covered with your packing list.

You can also double check any RV apps you use that may mention some things we might have left out, so they’re worth looking into.

Having said all that, we’ve got a quick packing reference to get you started:

  •      Clothes (Seasonally appropriate)
  •      Personal hygiene products
  •      Extra pair of walking shoes
  •      Kitchen utensils and cooking ware
  •      Dish and Clothing Detergents
  •      Food for every meal
  •      Outdoor folding chairs
  •      Linens
  •      Emergency tool kit
  •      Basic survival kit
  •      First aid kit
  •      Campfire gear
  •      Outdoor activity gear
  •      A deck of cards and other games

Budget Properly

Budgeting can be incredibly difficult, especially if you’re new to RV travel. You’ll need to make sure you’re factoring all sorts of spending areas. Once again, Independence RV has provided a quick reference of travel costs you’ll want to budget for:

  •      Campground fees
  •      Fuel
  •      Attraction entrance fees
  •      Groceries
  •      Souvenirs
  •      Propane

One part of the budget many people skip, which they shouldn’t, is the emergency budget. The last thing you want is for a breakdown or an injury to cut the trip short. Not only is the situation itself stressful, but when you’re far from home, you don’t want to make matters worse by not having a fund or the right insurance to cover the costs. Make sure you’re setting aside part of your budget for a rainy day.
